The electroplating of vermeil or 18-karat gold near Besançon
Gold plating is the process of applying a layer of gold to silver jewelry by electrolysis, by immersing it in gold baths.
What is vermeil?
Vermeil is a precious metal.
It is defined by the composition of the jewelry’s base, 925 sterling silver, and the thickness of the gold layer over the piece, which is 5 microns.
For gold-plated jewelry, the layer is 3 microns thick. Below 3 microns, it can only be described as “gold-colored.”
The vermeil gold plating is done near Besançon, where a 5-micron layer of 18-karat gold is applied to the jewelry.
It gives the jewelry exceptional longevity.
